What is Toner and Should You Be Incorporating it into Your Skincare Routine?

step of the old school cleanse, tone, moisturize routine, toners fell out of favor for years, as they often contained high concentrations of alcohol to remove oil from the skin. But the toners of your teenage years have had a makeover (thanks in large part to K-Beauty) and this time around they are loaded with beneficial ingredients like acids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories, and are suitable for every skin type.

There are multiple reasons a toner is a crucial part of an effective skincare routine, not least because of its role in prepping the skin and boosting the effects of the products that follow. For that reason, toners should still be used right after cleansing, as damp skin is more permeable than dry skin. Toners also work to help recalibrate the skin’s pH balance after exposure to chlorine or minerals in tap water during cleansing and can remove any debris your cleanser might have missed. True multitaskers, today’s toners can also target an array of skin concerns from dullness and congestion to dehydration, depending on your skin concerns.

When applying toner you can either use a cotton pad or press it straight into the skin using the palm of your hands, making sure you cover the entire face, neck, and chest. Once fully absorbed, follow with a serum, moisturizer, eye cream, and SPF.

Here, four toners perfect for a range of skin types.
