Six Ways To Detox Your Beauty Routine in 2023
A new year is the perfect time to turn over a new page and start afresh, whether it’s detoxing your diet or your skin and hair care routine.
Fortunately, cleaning up your beauty routine has never been easier, thanks to the boom in new safe, high-performance, better-for-you skin, hair and makeup products, and increased transparency and information about the ingredients they contain.
Here at Onda, we are deeply passionate about what we’re calling “intelligent beauty” and truly believe in the benefits of switching up our self-care products to ones that are better for our bodies (both inside and out) and the planet. To us, clean is more than the products we put on our skin–it’s a way of life–and one that making the transition to shouldn’t have to be difficult.
Here, our six step, easy starter guide to detoxing your beauty routine and making the switch to clean.
START WITH EVERYDAY PRODUCTS
START WITH EVERYDAY PRODUCTS
Start by cleaning up the products you use most frequently and that cover the most surface area of your body - think lotions, moisturizers, sunscreens, and maybe even your soap or body wash. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it absorbs everything you put on it, so start by switching out these products first.
SWAP OUT THE REST OF YOUR PRODUCTS AS YOU RUN OUT
You don’t need to go and throw away everything in your bathroom. Instead, if you are running out of a certain product, or the product is nearing its expiration date, use this as an opportunity to switch over to a different product.
While there are no U.S. laws or regulations that require cosmetics to have specific shelf lives or have expiration dates on their labels, if properly stored in a cool, dry place, most unopened and completely sealed makeup should last for 2 to 3 years. Once opened, the following guidelines are recommended.
Lipstick 18–24 months
Lip gloss 12–18 months
Foundation and concealer 12–18 months
Mascara 3–6 months
Liquid eyeliner 3–6 months
Cream products 12–18 months
Powder products 12–18 months
REFER TO DATABASES
At Onda our mission is to ensure that you are using efficient and safe products in your beauty routine. We feel “clean” should be synonymous with “safe” and use the EWG’s Skin Deep rating scale as our North Star when reviewing and selecting products. You can learn more about our Clean Beauty Standards here.
LOOK FOR CLEAN CERTIFICATES
Seals such as Ecocert, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE®, USDA Certified Biobased Product and National Eczema Association (NEA) Seal of Acceptance make it easier for consumers to identify clean beauty products. Clean certifications have a strict process of evaluation before being awarded to a product and many of our brands carry these seals. It is worth noting, though, that these certifications can be expensive, and therefore may preclude smaller brands that are just starting out and may not have the financial resources from acquiring them. So in the end, it always makes sense to research the products you’re interested in and make informed, intelligent decisions.
SWITCH TO MULTI-USE PRODUCTS
Multi-tasking products are a win-win for both you and the planet, as that means using fewer products that do more and create less waste.
PACKAGING IS IMPORTANT
Clean beauty goes hand-in-hand with clean manufacturing. Look for brands that use minimal packaging and sustainable materials such as post-consumer recycled plastic, glass, aluminum, biodegradable materials, and FSC-certified paper. More brands today are also offering refills and committing to carbon offsets or becoming carbon neutral and instituting their own recycling programs.
