1. WINE TO BEAUTY
When did you know that you wanted to develop skincare?
I started to dig into the so-called “luxury” products I was using and found out that they were made from cheap, often toxic synthetic ingredients. My winemaking background had instilled a respect for the finest raw materials and honoring them through methodical formulations. The products I was using were anything but. This was the genesis of Vintner’s Daughter. I wanted to create true luxury skincare on the same foundations as fine winemaking.
2. TRUE RESULTS
I’ve heard you say you struggled with your own skin issues. What were they, and do your products help?
I had cystic acne and hyper-pigmentation all my life, and then, as I grew older, all the fun stuff that comes along; fine lines and loss of elasticity. I was tired of trendy ingredients or products that promised results but never really worked. I wanted products that had such a deep connection to my skin that they would speak their own language. When you apply Active Treatment Essence followed by Active Botanical Serum, your skin is receiving all the hydration, moisture, nutrition, and plant actives it needs to be its very best in two simple yet powerful steps. I’m still amazed at what they do for my acne-prone, pigmented, 45-year-old skin.
3. ON SHORTCUTS
What are the similarities between making wine and creating a skincare line?
More than anything, it is a shared ethos around doing whatever it takes to make the very best of something. When I first brought our three-week-long formula to labs, I was turned away time and time again. They were not used to making anything that took over one day. They encouraged me to take short cuts and use cheap alternatives. My winemaking background allowed me to hold to those values of craftsmanship and never cutting corners to save time or money.

What is the one product you can’t live without, and why?
That is easy, and it's two products—not one—because they are each other’s perfect complement. People think hydration and moisture are the same, but in fact, they are different, and your skin needs both. Hydration is water, and moisture is oil. I wish I had a magic solution to share, but really it's about setting priorities and laddering everything back to them. Sometimes you have to be quite brutal about what stays and what goes.
